SnagIt Screen Capture and Sharing
Spotlight on Robert Porter, Construction Imaging SystemsRobert Porter, Vice President of Technology Resources at Construction Imaging Systems, originally contacted TechSmith to express his satisfaction with SnagIt. He wrote, "You folks are fantastic. The best single software investment I've ever made was buying SnagIt. I can no longer conceive of doing my job without it." "I fire up SnagIt, clip the appropriate section, dump it in an e-mail, and the question is answered. They love it." - Robert Porter, Vice President of Technology Resources He continued, "And it's a smart investment as well - you constantly improve the product and add features, yet the basic operation hasn't ever changed. I use SnagIt without even thinking about it - it's just there, doing what it does better than anything else on the market. Thank you all for a fine product that makes my life much easier!" Obviously, we wanted to know more. So we contacted Mr. Porter at Construction Imaging Systems, which provides document imaging and workflow solutions. This means that they create imaging software that allows people to scan correspondence and index it. People can use their system to electronically route paperwork, like invoices and POs, so there's no actual paper involved in the process. Mr. Porter said that after using SnagIt for seven years, he calls upon it for a variety of purposes. Most commonly, he uses it to answer questions from people in the field. Since he's the head of technical resources, he gets asked how to perform tasks in many different applications. He said, "I fire up SnagIt, clip the appropriate section, dump it in an e-mail, and the question is answered. They love it. That way, they can see how it looks, and they don't have to interpret what I'm saying." They also use SnagIt to create their company newsletter. He uses SnagIt to capture new features in the software - like a new menu item - and highlights it with the yellow highlighter in SnagIt's Editor. He then adds a descriptive blurb and pastes it into Publisher, and the newsletter is fully illustrated. He added that he uses SnagIt to create quick mockups for brochures by snagging images from what they've done before. He said, "This way, we can quickly make something and don't have to search everywhere for the image files. Region capture makes it so much easier - I can get it done in half the time." Mr. Porter uses his SnagIt folder to keep a scrapbook of Internet articles that relate to his industry. He said, "A lot of times I want just the text - not all the graphics that appear on the Web site. I clip them, put them in the scrapbook, and sort them by subject so I can go back and find them again later. I use that all the time for my job." What triggered the e-mail, however, was SnagIt's Torn Edge Effect, which places ragged edges around the image, as if it were really ripped off the screen. He said, "It's the absolutely perfect way to indicate that I'm just showing a portion of the menu - not the entire menu. I got exactly that feedback: a guy told me that he never could find a menu that looked like the one I sent, because I didn't show the entire menu. But when it appeared torn, he understood. The Torn Edge Effect saves me a lot of explaining." He concluded, "Especially in today's global business climate, a picture or image will often cross cultural boundaries much more easily than any other medium. Since people communicate visually far more efficiently than with the written word, I've found SnagIt to be an indispensable aid to communicating information."
