Don't you love all the free information available on the web to help make purchasing decisions?
When building myself a home PC a couple years back, I discovered benchmark reviews at Tom's Hardware that helped me find the best gaming card for the buck. DPreview.com is an amazing resource for super-detailed reports on nearly every digital camera model imaginable. And customer reviews on sites like Amazon.com or Newegg have steered me away from certain products and toward others more times than I can count.
And yet, when looking for software to fill a specific need, I don't have a tried-and-true source for in-depth, trustworthy, practical reviews. Instead, I tend to just download the trial version and give it a test drive.
How about you? What are your favorite sources when researching a software purchase...a review in a magazine or on a blog? A conversation with a friend or tweet on Twitter? Online user reviews and ratings? A trial version?
Respond to this poll to share your ideas with other Snagiteers (feel free to include details in the comments).
And be sure not to miss this month's helpfully detailed SnagIt 9 review from Tom's Guide...even if you've used SnagIt for awhile you may pick up some useful tips.

P.S. - Thanks for the kind notes last month...I had a great vacation in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Or as we like to put it, "Say yah to dah UP, eh?" |

Blogger and SnagIt user Tom Humbarger got our attention last month with a post all about SnagIt.
As a Social Media exercise, I'm going to share my thoughts on SnagIt and try to get some Link-love, Twitter-love and Facebook-love for my favorite product. I don’t work for TechSmith or know anyone there - and they don't give me free software. But the point of Social Media is that they should know about me and want to cultivate more very happy customers like me who will go out of their way to trumpet their product.
Trumpet he did. So I interviewed Tom to ask a few additional questions about how he's using SnagIt in his day-to-day and where he sees visual communication and social media intersecting.

| User Tip: Road warrior saves time with SnagIt Printer trick |

Today's SnagIt tip comes from John Sutton, who works as a senior facilities advisor for Chevron.
...I set SnagIt as my default printer [because] I travel a lot, and if my default printer is in my home office half-way 'round the world, my computer wastes a lot of time looking for it. This is particularly aggravating in Word, which won't fully start properly until it has identified the printer.
By using SnagIt as my default printer, I don't lose any time starting applications, and I miss all of the annoying "printer not found" messages.
This works because when you install SnagIt you have the option of installing SnagIt Printer. And then you can configure Windows to use SnagIt Printer as the default printer. Sweet, huh? Details here...
John also shared a couple of details about how his SnagIt-fueled projects grab attention at the #3 company on the Fortune 500 list. He writes,
I have been a happy SnagIt customer for years, paying for it out of my own pocket, but now Chevron is a corporate customer and has SnagIt available for all employees. Whenever anyone says "Wow, how did you do that?", I tell them how great SnagIt is and help them to download it from our corporate software license site.

Tom's Guide recently reviewed SnagIt 9 and, true to their reputation, the article goes beyond a superficial description of obvious features.
Check out the review and you may just discover some of SnagIt's lesser-known abilities...like capturing icons from an .exe file, grabbing one frame from a DVD video, snagging the text from an error message, and a fairly obscure JPG subsampling feature the author claims is not even available in Photoshop!

Once you have the ability to capture super tall or wide webpages with SnagIt's autoscroll feature...there's no going back.
So what do you do when autoscroll fails to work (as it may do in certain applications or on some framed webpages)?
In this video, I'll give you two alternative methods to get the job done in those (thankfully rare) cases where the standard Scrolling Window profile lets you down.
Watch the tutorial and you'll be able to say with confidence, "That's how I scroll." |
